A significant enlargement of the nipple can be a huge complication for a man, complicating everyday life among people. Fortunately, with a simple plastic surgery, you can get rid of this problem.
Gynecomastia – causes
Gynecomastia is an enlargement of one or both breasts in boys or men, caused by excessive growth of glandular tissue, and sometimes fat tissue in the nipple area. Typically, this problem arises due to a hormonal imbalance in the body. All people have both male and female hormones to some extent. Gynecomastia occurs when the level of male hormones (androgens) is relatively low compared to the levels of female hormones (estrogens) in the body. This can temporarily happen during normal development of boys, causing gynecomastia in infants or in adolescence. In these cases, gynecomastia usually goes away on its own when hormone levels return to normal.
In other cases, certain diseases can contribute to the development of gynecomastia. Examples of conditions that may be associated with gynecomastia include:
- liver cirrhosis,
- malnutrition,
- chronic kidney failure,
- testicular disorders (male sex organs), including infection, trauma or congenital disorders
- aging,
- testicular cancer,
- antiandrogen therapy used to treat prostate cancer
- hyperactivity of the thyroid gland
What are the signs and symptoms of gynecomastia?
Breast enlargement in gynecomastia usually occurs symmetrically relative to the nipple. The nipple is enlarged and slightly “rubbery”. Usually both mammary glands suffer from this problem. Gynecomastia is not accompanied by severe pain, although the enlarged area may be sensitive and tender.
Gynecomastia – treatment.
In some cases of severe gynecomastia that does not go away spontaneously or after treatment, surgical removal of excess glandular and/or fatty tissue is necessary. Breast reduction surgery is especially useful for men in whom breast enlargement is a cosmetic defect. The excess tissue is removed by cutting it out. The skin incision is made under the breasts, from the side of the axillary fold or under the nipple areola.
Advantages:
- It is a relatively simple procedure
- Leaves minimal scars
- The recovery period is quite short
- The price of the procedure is relatively low compared to other more popular plastic surgeries
Gynecomastia treatment can be performed in healthy and emotionally balanced men of any age. The best candidates are men whose chest skin is resilient and elastic.
Gynecomastia – contraindications
Surgical intervention is contraindicated in men with obesity or excessive weight, who abuse alcohol and take anabolic steroids.
What is the recovery period after gynecomastia surgery?
Usually, the patient returns to daily activities within a week. It is recommended to wear light clothing to support the treatment area for 4-6 weeks after treatment, to lightly press on the chest area. This reduces swelling and bruising and speeds up recovery.
