Gynecomastia is an affliction of men that manifests itself as breast enlargement due to hypertrophy of the nipples. Its cause is the overgrowth of glandular tissue or excess fatty tissue around the breast gland. Gynecomastia can manifest on either one or both breasts. Usually the nipples then become swollen and puffy, and a specific darker coloration appears around them. They may feel pain, and sometimes there is a specific discharge from the nipples.
The causes of gynecomastia can be varied. It can occur as a result of medications (such as those with estrogenic effects), hormonal disorders, and high obesity, among other things. Treatment of gynecomastia is based on hormone regulation, but in extremely advanced cases it requires surgery.
Causes and treatment of gynecomastia
Gynecomastia can be caused by many factors. It is primarily an affliction that occurs as a result of hormonal disorders. This is because nipple hypertrophy can occur when the level of estrogens – female hormones – in the male body is higher than the level of androgens, male hormones. Endocrine disruption is influenced by medications. These include medications taken by patients as part of anti-androgen therapies, which are used to treat prostate cancer, or drugs that inhibit testosterone synthesis. Sometimes other conditions can be the cause of gynecomastia. Examples include hyperthyroidism or cirrhosis and liver or kidney failure. Sex hormone metabolism is then significantly reduced, causing the aforementioned endocrine disruption.
Gynecomastia can appear as early as in newborns and very often disappears spontaneously. Sometimes its symptoms appear during puberty and adolescence. Treatment of gynecomastia should be based primarily on eliminating the source of the disease. It is therefore extremely important to find the etiological agent on the basis of medical history and the necessary tests. When treatment, such as by stabilizing hormones with medication, does not help, surgical removal of excess glandular and/or fatty tissue is necessary. It involves cutting away the excess of these tissues by incising the appropriate areas around the chest.
Cryolipolysis – treatment for gynecomastia
