Cryolipolysis uses low temperature to break down fat cells. Unlike other cell types, fat cells are particularly susceptible to the effects of cold. While the fat cells freeze, the skin and other structures are protected from injury. It is one of the most popular non-surgical fat reduction methods, with more than 450,000 procedures performed worldwide.
Cryolipolysis – how does it work?
Cryolipolysis is the use of negative temperature to break down fat cells. Cold does not damage other cells in the same way as fat cells, so there should be no damage to the skin or subcutaneous tissue. During the procedure, the technician prepares the skin over the fat area for the applicator, which cools the fat cells. Low temperatures anesthetize the area, and some patients report feeling cold.
Most treatments last about an hour. There is no recovery time because there is no skin or tissue damage. Some patients report mild discomfort at the site of the procedure, similar to that experienced after intense training or minor muscle trauma.
After the procedure, it can take about 4-6 months for the fat cells to leave the body. During this time, the fat area will decrease by an average of 20 percent.
Cryolipolysis – is it effective?
The treatments have a high success rate. They are effective in removing fat from the body and have fewer side effects than other procedures, such as liposuction. While this procedure can remove areas of fat, it is not a miracle cure, and patients should not expect complete fat removal. The procedure will not work for everyone, and some patients may experience worse side effects than others.
Lifestyle and other factors can also play a role. A person who continues to eat an unhealthy diet and does not spend any active time can expect less fat reduction.
Cryolipolysis – what parts can the treatment be applied to?
The procedure can be performed in a doctor’s office or clinic. The size and shape of the fat deposit is assessed, and the treated area is marked with a skin marking pencil. During the procedure, patients are awake. A handheld device called an applicator is used to freeze the layer of fat cells (adipocytes) under the skin. First, a gel pad is applied to protect the skin. The oily bulge is then extracted. While sucking, you will feel a tug or pull. These sensations, intense cold and other possible sensations – tingling, stinging, pain, cramps – subside after 5 to 10 minutes, when the area becomes numb during the cooling process. The fat layer is gradually cooled.

Post-treatment effects are visible 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure. Fat reduction is seen in 20-40 percent. The entire body contouring process can take up to 12 weeks. The treatment time for fat freezing ranges from 40 to 60 minutes and depends on the thickness of the fatty tissue. The duration of the procedure is determined by a specialist after an initial analysis of the thickness of the fatty tissue. No special preparation is needed for the procedure, but specialists recommend that you follow a diet that is easy to digest, without a lot of fats. Avoid coffee, liver-taxing foods or alcohol. Physical exertion is also inadvisable.
