Lasers for hair removal – how do modern devices work?
Laser depilation allows permanent hair removal, which means that hair does not grow back after contact with the laser beam. The essence of lasers is the absorption of the laser beam by the dye produced by hair follicles during the hair growth phase. Innovative epilation devices are able to destroy hair after the first treatment. The series should be repeated, as only hair in a growing state is destroyed. Some, on the other hand, go through a resting phase and do not produce melanin during this time.
Under the influence of the laser, the hair structure located in the skin is heated up, so that the hair follicles die and are no longer capable of producing more hair. The mentioned pigment (melanin) is also found in the skin. Therefore, selective action, i.e. a concentrated laser beam, as well as the right wavelength, is very important for hair removal devices.
Why is it important to be able to choose a laser for hair removal?
The focused action of the laser beam increases safety during the treatment and allows for permanent hair removal without irritation. However, in order for epilation to be effective, the laser should be characterized by high power depending on skin phototype and hair color. Dark hair contains more pigment, so the laser reaches it more effectively, detecting the contrast between the hair and the light complexion.
