Gynecomastia – causes
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of one or both breasts in boys or men, caused by excessive growth of glandular and sometimes fatty tissue in the nipple area. What are the signs and symptoms of gynecomastia?
Breast enlargement in gynecomastia is usually symmetrical with respect to the nipple. The nipple is enlarged and slightly “rubbery”. Usually both breasts are affected. Gynecomastia is not accompanied by severe pain, although the enlarged area may be sensitive and tender.

In some cases of significantly severe gynecomastia that does not resolve spontaneously or under treatment, surgical removal of excess glandular and/or adipose tissue is necessary. The breast reduction procedure is particularly helpful for men whose breast growth is a cosmetic defect. Removal of excess tissue involves excision. The skin incision is made under the breast, on the side of the axillary fold or under the areola of the nipple.
